After a hurricane exposes forgotten military graves in the South Carolina Sea Islands, Marcus Middleton returns home to find generations of Black soldiers rising from the marsh. Led by Jeremiah Saint, a Harlem Hellfighter lynched after World War I, the dead have come to collect what history denied them. But when Marcus discovers one of the risen is Avery Cole, a soldier from his own past whose death he helped erase, the reckoning becomes personal.

As the dead march toward vengeance, Marcus must confront the truth he helped bury before the government erases the island, the graves, and the soldiers forever.
